Recognition Frequently Asked Questions
Last updated: October 2026
Answers to common questions about Ethics Forum International (EFI) Ethics & Ethicality Recognition.
1. What is EFI Ethics & Ethicality Recognition?
EFI Ethics & Ethicality Recognition acknowledges professionals and organisations that demonstrate a sustained commitment to ethics and ethicality through learning, reflection, responsible practice, accountability and contribution.
Recognition is awarded following an independent assessment of evidence submitted against the relevant EFI Recognition Framework.
Recognition does not imply ethical perfection. It acknowledges demonstrated commitment to the ongoing development and practice of ethicality.
2. Who can apply for Recognition?
EFI offers four Recognition pathways:
- Professional Recognition — for individual professionals across disciplines and sectors.
- Association & Small Business Recognition — for professional associations, independent providers, professional practices and small businesses.
- Institutions & Organisations Recognition — for universities, educational institutions, charities, research organisations and other organisations with established governance structures.
- Corporate Recognition — for companies, corporate groups and enterprises operating nationally or internationally.
Each pathway has specific eligibility criteria and evidence requirements.
Applicants should review the relevant Recognition pathway before applying.
3. Do I need to be an EFI member to apply?
No. EFI Ethics & Ethicality Recognition is available to members and non-members.
Eligible EFI members receive preferential Recognition fees in accordance with their membership benefits.
Non-members can create a free EFI account to access the application process.
4. How do I know which Recognition pathway is appropriate?
The appropriate pathway depends on whether you are applying as an individual professional or an organisation, and on the organisation’s structure, governance and operating context.
Each pathway has a dedicated information page explaining its eligibility requirements.
If you are uncertain which pathway applies, please contact EFI before submitting an application.
5. Do I need to meet all the Recognition requirements before applying?
Yes. Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the requirements of their chosen Recognition Framework.
Each pathway has a downloadable Recognition Guide and Evidence Records Workbook outlining the required evidence.
Applicants are encouraged to review these documents and prepare their evidence before submitting an application.
Payment of the Application Review Fee does not guarantee Recognition.
6. Can I use learning and professional activities completed outside EFI as evidence?
Yes. EFI Recognition acknowledges relevant ethical learning, reflection, professional engagement and contribution, regardless of whether these activities take place within the EFI ecosystem.
Evidence must meet the requirements of the relevant Recognition Framework.
Participation in EFI activities may contribute towards Recognition where it satisfies the applicable criteria.
7. Does completing an EFI course or participating in EFI activities automatically qualify me for Recognition?
No.
Participation in EFI courses, workshops, Dialogues and other activities may contribute towards the evidence required for Recognition.
However, Recognition requires applicants to demonstrate that they meet all applicable requirements of their chosen Recognition Framework.
Recognition is awarded only following independent assessment by the EFI Recognition Council.
8. How long does Recognition remain valid?
Recognition periods vary according to the pathway:
| Recognition pathway | Recognition period |
|---|---|
| Professional | 2 years |
| Association & Small Business | 3 years |
| Institutions & Organisations | 4 years |
| Corporate | 4 years |
Renewal requires updated evidence demonstrating continued engagement with the relevant Recognition Framework.
9. What happens if my application is unsuccessful?
Recognition is awarded only when the EFI Recognition Council determines that the submitted evidence meets the applicable requirements.
Applicants whose submissions do not meet the requirements will be informed of the outcome.
Any further application must satisfy the relevant Recognition requirements and applicable application conditions.
10. Is EFI Recognition the same as professional accreditation or certification?
No.
EFI Ethics & Ethicality Recognition is an independent, evidence-based acknowledgement of sustained ethical engagement and development.
It does not replace professional accreditation, regulatory requirements, qualifications or profession-specific accountability mechanisms.
Recognition complements these arrangements by acknowledging ethical learning, reflection, accountability and contribution across professional and organisational contexts.
